our first event - and a windy one at that!
The inaugural RS Tera Scottish Championships saw 23 Teras descend on Wormit Boating Club on the River Tay on Saturday 31st August and Sunday
1st September. Sailors came from as far north as Chanonry Sailing Club and Royal Findhorn Yacht Club down to Portobello Sailing Club and Derwent Reservoir. The Tay was well represented by sailors from Royal Tay Yacht Club and host club Wormit.
Saturday was a training day led by our coach for the day , Mark
Barron. The cadets were split into two groups and after some onshore instruction took to the water in a good force 4. Improvements in boat handling in strong winds and mark rounding were evident throughout the morning session but after a big gust hit during gybing practise knocking a few boats over we decided to run to shore for lunch. After lunch everyone was keen for more so in a building breeze the fleet headed back out for more strong wind practise. The afternoon session had to be cut short because of the ever increasing breeze. Everyone came ashore with smiles on their faces, having done well to battle the elements!
After some theory work on the use of transits in starts we were left to enjoy a BBQ in the sun.
Sunday saw another windy day. After a postponement, which was filled with football and games in the local park, we tried to run some short races near the sheltered shore but after having 9 boats go out and struggle in the building breeze we had to abandon the racing, which was unfortunate for Peter Owen from Derwent as he looked really impressive in the strong winds.
All the sailors did really well and had a fantastic weekend. With 23 boats at the first event in Scotland and with more training and racing events planned for Teras in Scotland in 2014 the future of the RS Tera in Scotland is bright.

Scottish RS Tera travellers series Event 1 Dalgety Bay Sailing Club Saturday 7th June.
18 Mad keen tera sailors in front of the new Dalgety Bay sailing Club tera fleet before some high wind speed reaching shenanigans!!
18 RS Teras gathered at Dalgety Bay sailing club for the first of five tera events in Scotland in 2014. Dalgety Bay sailing club have recently acquired a fleet of five new teras with the help of the Eric Twiname Trust and RS, and with boats form other fleets from other sailing clubs like Wormit and Royal Tay etc , we were set for a great day.
Unfortunately the forecast proved correct with winds of 30knots plus building thro out the day. But with a good cover of safety boats on the water from Dalgety Bay, and coaches available to help out, we managed at least to get some sailing for virtually all the 18 kids present, sending them out with reefed sails and loads of confidence!! Everyone did amazingly well in some really windy conditions with Ross and Eilean Mauritzen definitely loving the big winds so much that we had trouble keeping them off the water, and with some great sailing from everyone on the day.
It’s a shame we couldn’t put any racing on thro the day, but everyone came ashore smiling and definitely found out that they can sail and control their boat in a lot more wind than they originally thought and had a good day with games also on the shore and some onshore coaching.
Big thanks to Dalgety for trying so hard for us , and trying so hard to make sure we got some sailing in, putting on excellent catering for everyone and hopefully we can rearrange another date in the diary later in the year.
Next event in Scottish tera diary is 26th/27th July at Royal Findhorn yacht club up near Inverness. This is a great venue, excellent club, fantastic beaches and village, camping and coaching and racing available both days. Boats available to borrow for this event, please get in touch thro scottish tera website at http://scottishteras.weebly.com/ if interested in borrowing a boat for an event or a demo sail at your club.
